Our top 3 tips for your first reformer class

Starting your first reformer Pilates class can be both exciting and a little daunting. To help you feel confident and get the most out of your session with us, here are three essential tips:

1. Focus on your form, not the speed

The reformer allows for a wide range of movements, but it’s important to prioritise control over speed. Take your time to learn each exercise correctly — the slow, precise movements engage your muscles more effectively and reduce the risk of injury. Our instructors are here to guide you and ensure your alignment supports your body’s natural movement.

2. Communicate with your instructor

Everyone moves differently, especially when using reformer equipment for the first time. Let your instructor know if you have any injuries, limitations, or concerns before the class starts. This helps them tailor the session to your needs, making your experience safer and more enjoyable. Remember, we’re here to support you every step of the way.

3. Wear comfortable, fitted clothing

Choose clothing that allows your instructor to see your alignment clearly but also gives you freedom of movement. Avoid overly loose clothes that can get caught in the reformer’s springs or straps. Grip socks are recommended for safety and stability, if you don’t already have any, most online retailers sell them from H&M to Lululemon.

By following these tips, you’ll feel prepared to make the most of your first reformer Pilates class. At The Formula, our fully accessible studio welcomes every body and every identity, providing a supportive space for you to move confidently and with purpose. We look forward to seeing you on the reformer soon!
